Keens Steakhouse, a classic New York chophouse, was already famous for its steaks and chops at the turn of the century. Founded in 1885, Keens has 90,000 clay pipes that line the ceilings – pipes once smoked by customers after dinner. Today Keens legendary mutton chops and dry aged prime steaks are still without equal in the city.

Get the mutton chops! You won't regret it. Very flavorful even after the meat has cooled. NY sirloin is about 2.5 to 3 inches thick, nicely cooked. Even we like the blue cheese dip that came with the free bread and small vegetable app (olives, carrots and celery sticks) The place has a very rustic, old NY kind of feel with the many smoking pipes adorning the ceiling. There is a lot of history in this place. The service was friendly. I like the meats here compared to Peter Luger, that mutton is the best I've eaten. I do like the sundae fudge at Luger's though. Overall a must place to eat if you like steaks.

Service was impeccable and speedy. I had the best brick chicken (and best chicken I have ever had) in my life. The servers and staff were so friendly and even on a busy night I didn’t feel rushed. Totally worth the price and I look forward to coming back.

Food was phenomenal. My boyfriend and I both order steak both were cooked perfectly. We also order one side of the seasonal grilled vegetables the flavor was so good we loved it all. And of course to complete our meal we ordered dessert I had the creme brulee and he had the cheesecake. We could not have been more satisfied. The service was spectacular too, they were extremely attentive and friendly.

This steakhouse was worth the price and the setting is fantastic if you appreciate history. I got the t-bone. It was good, not great. Cooked to the correct temperature and even throughout. Super thick and high quality meat. I would have preferred a little more seasoning. For the price point I would have expected a little more space. Tables of 2 are set extremely close together. You'll get to now your neighbors. Our server was good, but again not the excellence you would expect from this caliber of place.

Best steak house and not only. If you are looking for oysters or lobster you will not be disappointed either. But you should really go and try their meat selection and fantastic sauces that accompany them. Service is fantastic. Professional and on spot. Environment, music, decor etc. is wonderful. One of the best NYC restaurant and steak house.

The waiter was very attentive to use and made sure we was happy and that you don't get much in places any more .Over all if you want to go to a good steak house then this is one of the good places left in NYC .

Why go to Brooklyn? Outstanding steak house right in midtown. Second time here. Restaurant is old/historic inside (classic not dumpy). Steaks and other food are all outstanding; as is service. We ate at the bar this time (no reservation) and waited about 20 min for seats, didn't mind the bar experience at all. NOTE there is a lesser priced menu available at the bar in addition to the full menu. Highly recommend, won't be traveling again to Brooklyn for an outstanding steak!

Keens Steakhouse was an amazing experience. The Mutton was unlike anything I have ever had before. It melted in my mouth. The sides and veggies were prepared properly. The martinis were great and complimented the meal very well. We had arrived 20 minutes late, but called ahead and the staff was very accommodatingAll in all Keens was a wonderful experience and I can see myself coming back soon!

Amazing steakhouse... I work in the city and have inherently been to quite a number of steakhouses... When considering ambiance, history, location, atmosphere, and food quality - it is hard to beat out Keens in NYC. Make sure you try the mutton chop at least once in your life... quite the unusual cut of lamb but with a try! I’ve been here for mainly work related dinners - but can certainly see myself coming here for pleasure as well.

Love the decor of this place, very old fashioned but with its personality. We had the porterhouse. It was good quality steak, and it was also cooked right on point. Not as greasy as other American steakhouse, but also a bit lack of flavor. We had to order extra sauce for the steak. The portions are so we shared for two and is was plenty. Their bread rolls and butter were excellent!

We had reservations at an upscale place that seated us 30 minutes past our reservations. We called Keens and they did a late reservation. We were thankful the bad experience to one, led us to an incredible dinner with our new fave. From the very moment we stepped foot in Keens, we felt welcomed. The food, atmosphere and service were all 5*.There was 6 in our party and we all agreed this was our #1 stop within our visit to NYC.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Steaks were good, unfortunately the service was not up to par for what I would expect from a top rated NY steak restaurant. Could have just been our particular server this night, unfortunately it was our first time and we love Royal 35, Gallagher's, and Benjamin's, so no reason to go back here. I'm pretty easy to please, and rate 5 stars frequently for a frame of reference.

Legendary mutton chop was good but not spectacular as I was hope it will be.Overall its really high quality food w old classic atmosphere. The French onion soup was good almost excellent but not awesome as it should be.Maybe this is why I like this place, just fine experience without flashy flavor or visuals its almost humble for what it is.

Reference location for steak in NYC. Doubt you'll find a better steak elsewhere, Omaha included. Pipes lend an otherworldly air to the place, and that only increases the allure. I have not been able to count how many floors or rooms the place has, but they are all intimate. It's a business destination, but I think it's even more suited to a date.

I've been to many steakhouses. None compare to Keens. It has the feel of having been around forever, serving perfectly cooked steaks, chops, etc. In large quantity. Bring a truly large appetite. I had the prime rib this time. Magnificent. Note the pipes

The appetizers where delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection. Service was exceptional. Desserts where wonderful. I went with friends for a holiday meal and it was well worth it. We all thoroughly enjoyed our dinning experience.

Keens is an institution that MUST be visited at least once, and you will be unlikely to go just once. The beef is fantastic, and the atmosphere makes the word "historically authentic" seem inadequate. The mutton is famous, but you can also get a rasher or oysters just like Diamond Jim Brady. The Bar is also fantastic but can get very crowded. For the most part, you MUST have a reservation to get into this place on MOST weeknights - not for the last minute decision unless you go at 10pm. You can walk-in to the bar and bar seating area, but don't count on getting a table.

Very classy place with excellent food and service, you certainly wont be disappointed. The seafood is extremely fresh and the red meat is cooked to perfect. I will warn you that the mutton chop has an obscure bone, it can be extremely difficult to cut while intoxicated. I highly recommend.

Questions & Answers

I went with my kids, and we had a ball!

Business casual is the best way I can describe it for you. Not too dressy but definitely not a dress down establishment.

15 k plus on ceilings, they have thousands more in storage in the basement.

Our host staff is there to answer all your questions after 9:00 am Mon-Fri and after 11:00 am Sat-Sun.

My kids had a great time. 10 and 15 y.o. Mature kids will appreciate a little more since it's very historic, and there are so many artifacts on the walls. Lincoln stuff really got my older kid interested. For toddlers, this place may be too dark, damp, and boring. Good luck.

The good thing is they have the same menu in the Bar. But its also crowded. There you should get a Table if you are early enough and ready to wait. Recommendation would be make a reservation

Yes.

Yes they do. Try out the jacket potatoes with creamy spinach.

Yes they have seating at the bar.
